Subaru Upper Engine Cleaner review...

Bit like the old days when we would give a few good squirts of Redex down the carby at the servo!

Man, there was a LOT of white smoke with Redex.
So much so, that you could hardly even see the car!

Either that or he didn't do it right. Pull your intake pipe off, lock open the throttle body, get a torch and make sure you coat the whole inside of the manifold. I even pull the plugs out and spray it onto the tops of the pistons.

Did mine yesterday before I serviced the car.

Hi green_comet,

Sorry, this is off topic, but what exhaust setup have you got? It sounds great.

Cheers

So I finally managed to get my hands on one of these cans  , attemped it tonight with not much luck

1. Ran the engine to running temp = OK
2. Switch off engine = OK
3. Attempted to spray into 3 (marked in blue) different point in the manifold = Problem, when spraying the cleaner into the manifold, because they are L-shaped (marked in yellow), the cleaner doesn't get into the manifold without majority of the cleaner spilling out!

I'll try taking the intake pipe off tomorrow and spraying the cleaner directly on the throttle body and inside the manifold.

Otherwise, I'll just spray in the cleaner while the engine is running (safer?).

Any else have this problem on an NA6?

I had the same problem. Ended up just taking off the air intake and opening the throttle up with the engine off to spray it inside. Then started it up and pumped it through the valve with the engine running.

I still wanna find out what the proper way is to use it though...

Did this last week. Took off the intake pipe, opened the butterfly and sprayed about half the cleaner into the manifold. Re-attached the intake pipe, waited 5-10mins, started her up and sprayed the rest through the three valves. There was some smoke, but not plums of it(will post a vid when I get a chance).

Car is definitely more responsive and pulls better. Though, the car is idling at about 1000rpm and had developed a slight stumble sometimes when taking off from 1st

I'll adjust the idle this w/e and see if things improve.

Overall, happy with the produc 8)

My idle was out after I did mine too. At least you know it's definitely done something.

Is this stuff ok to use on cars with plastic inlet manifolds? I have a Mazda 6, figured i'd ask before putting it in.

I just bought a can, $18.50. When it says "spray half", how do you know when it's approximately half? For example, under full press, how long did you let it spray for half a can? 30 seconds? 1 minute?

(Sorry for necro-ing this old thread, but I thought it was suitable)

Its not that important.

I have used many boxes of this over time.

Spray half the can into the manifold. Straight past the butterfly. Then turn the engine over. Dont start it. Just crank it once or twice to get some of the foam past the valves onto the piston crown.

Leave half hour then start and run at 2000rpm. Spray rest into pcv at 2000rpm.
