Cost of clutch work on NA8 96

Postby pickjones » Fri Sep 02, 2016 11:28 pm

Hi guys, how much would it cost to get the clutch repair done in Melbourne.

Since a couple of months, I have been noticing a squeaky sound coming out when I press the clutch pedal down to change the gears. Sometimes it goes away by itself and sometimes it's really really loud. My mechanic who does the regular service said that it could be master of slave cylinder which might be leaking.

I am not sure if that's the cause. Has anyone faced this issue before?

If I need to get the clutch replaced, how much would it cost and which is the cheap and the best place to get it done. Thanks. :DIY: :NA8:

A slave cylinder isn't too expensive ($100ish plus not that much labour). A full clutch job is about $400 in labour plus the cost of the clutch kit. Allmaz did mine, no complaints here (Although hopefully they didn't weld the flywheel back on). MX5 Factory are usually my number one but they were fully booked for a couple of weeks at the time.

If it's just a squeak I'd just live with it. If you notice a significant change in clutch take up or biting point, or any slipping that's when I'd start calling around for quotes.

I think usually the slave dies first then the master. Slaves are like $35-40 and masters are more like $120.

Some people have sprayed the rod of the slave cylinder with lithium grease to get rid of the squeaky noise.

If you push down on the clutch put it into first gear and leave your foot pressed in on the clutch. does the car eventually move, if so you may be losing pressure due to leaking slave or master.
every ounce counts

As Wun mentioned it can sometimes be where the clutch slave cylinder rod contacts the fork that levers the clutch thrust bearing, which can be fixed by appropriate greasing.
But usually it's the thrust bearing or pilot bearing that's becoming unserviceable, which means replacing the thrust bearing & pilot bearing, as well as the clutch plate & pressure plate, to avoid revisiting.

pickjones just go to a few businesses where it suits you and have a chat. ABS does this work and any mechanic will do it as well. It might be a very simple thing and nothing to do with a clutch on the way out.If its not slipping or shuddering or is taking up wrongly then its probably ok. A clutch i.e. Exedy clutch kit including reface of clutch plate would be around$700 - but thats just ball park. It does not sound like anything terminal.

I would not be going to Allmaz based on Wuns recent post for atrocious work they did for him.

Thanks everyone for their valuable advice.

I have heard about Allmaz but never been there and I think I did the right thing. When I bought this car in 2014, I had been getting all my service done at MX5 Factory, but the service is costly and most of the time as mentioned by smy0003 they are booked out a couple of weeks in advance.

As suggested by Wun, I tried the 1st gear test, but the car doesn't move, which assured me that pressure is alright. I'll try greasing the slave cylinder rod and see how it goes. if not then will have to shop around. :NA8:
