So if you cut a new belt down the middle, that becomes two race belts?

Was told it was done at 150, I bought it at 165ish.
It has been replaced at some point. I can see the white out marks to see timing marks, and a gmb water pump (mazda don't use gmb as far as I'm aware).
Got it all pulled down now, timing was so far out its not funny. Completely stripped the belt. Found pieces of belt the more I pulled things apart.
Good news is, no other damage. TB idler and tensioner pulleys were fine. No damage to anything else.
So luckily, new belt and w/pump and I'll be set.

It's pretty unusual to see a belt disintegrate like that. Have you been able to work out why the belt actually failed? Are all the pulleys in good condition and running true?

What brand belt out of curiousity?

My timing belt did similar, stripped all the teeth from the end at he crank pulley after about 80,000km.
From memory it was "racer" brand......

It looked like the belt was just made badly, cheap rubber and the teeth we're bonded on rather than moulded in.

I put in a Gates one (and new tensioner/idler)

As for the water pump, from memory GMB are what Mazda use.

Couldn't see what brand it was.
Tensioner, idler and pulleys are all ok.
The car when it cut out had two massive bunny hops mid 2nd gear then cut out. Normal driving etc.

If the belt has only done about 15k, then perhaps it wasn't tensioned properly ?
There is a "tensioner set mark" for aligning the crank timing sprocket to, before releasing the tensioner onto the belt.
This mark is about 60 deg. before the timing mark, & it does make a difference.

Thanks for the heads up RS2000
The car has actually done just over 200k now. So has done a fair few ks since I bought it (as it should, top down and all).
But good reference for when I out mine back together.
