I run a coolant flow sensor and a 140 db alarm.

righto looks like i better remove this from the to-do list . i need to replace the pump soon (100K service) so that was the reason for looking into it... potentially more trouble than its worth by sound of it. thanks guys.

Coolant temp alarm at 110C, oil temp at 130C and oil pressure below 40psi.

i got a DC EWP80 with the digital controller in the car i just bought. seemed to run a bit hot and hunt a bit when on the freeway at about 130kmh.. Got it home and found the thermostat still in it!

So am about to remove and try again.. Also running bugger radiator so i assume it all looks ok.. What is annoying for me is that the Thermal sender that comes with the DC unit is not a direct replacement for the factory thermal sender.. 11mm vs 14mm thread.. So it is currently plumbed into another section of the coolant system..

Trying work out a fix for that now... annoying..

Tread carefully with pulling the thermostat out. It seems most leave it in. Could you post some photos of how the accessory belts are done with no water pump.

i cant imagine why you would leave the thermostat in if you have the digital controller and separate temperature sender.. then essentially you would have 2 sensors trying to control the water temp.. not a good idea.. if you didnt have the digital controller then absolutely leave the thermostat in!

As for the accessory belts they run the same. You simply remove the impeller from the water pump.. so it still spins though doesnt push any water around.

Anyways as i said im new to EWB and the car.. will post when i learn some more about it..

Sorry to revive an old thread, but there is another school of thought in regards to EWP and that is for underpowered cars, by removing the impeller on the water pump you are decreasing the load on the engine and potentially increasing power (marginally admittedly). Has this swayed anyones decision?

Also, are there any pictures of locations of the EWP from people who have it in their MX5?

A friend tried removing the fanbelt on a dyno day and found it made very little difference.

Past experience with these dictates leaving the thermostat base plate in to act as a flow restrictor AFTER cutting off the moving parts and saddle.
