No thats the normal price for a head service, I pay less if I strip the valves before taking it in.
$400 to 500, thats insane, thats a full race head service with flowed back valves machined stems and polished backsections and multi angle cut seats.
To the op,
If your car has done heaps of kms, be wary of doing a full head service as upping the pressure in the top end can cause problems down stairs, rings, bearing etc.
If the head test out ok, surface grind, and slap it back on until your ready to do the full monty, then do it properly.
Just a bit of advice from a silly old fart who actually does this sh*t for a living

I'm surprised you're getting a "race head" for $400... can you name the place that would do that?
