Oil Leak

Postby zc32s » Mon Aug 25, 2014 12:58 pm

I've got a small oil leak at the moment.

I was wondering if anyone would know where this would be coming from. Id like to have a bit of knowledge before taking it to the mechanics. Thanks

give it all a good DE-grease and wipe down so there is no crap anywhere.
then run the motor to nice and hot .
look again and maybe you can see where the oil is leaking.
if you go to a mechanic with it looking like that he will find about 10 different leaks and charge you to fix them all.
if you clean it all up you might find its just something simple you can fix.

as above. it is hard to tell since it has been left like that for a very long time. most likely front main seal.

Thanks guys.

I've given it a clean last week before posting this.

There are streams of oil coming from behind the pulley. So its likely the front main seal. Is it possible for the leak to be coming from somewhere else around this area?

The previous owner has told me that a major service was done in 2012 by MX5 Mania. But I have no evidence of this. Should I go ahead and get a major service completed?

Think the op is saying that's what it looked like before he cleaned it.

The pictures are probably a few months worth of leaking. I have no idea how long its been like that.

If it's leaking from the front seal then just replace that item. The advice is sound to clean it off with degreaser and then take it to a garage and they will see where the leak is. Check with the co that serviced the vehicle but don't assume that this item was replaced. If it's not leaking oil you are probably quite happy.
