advice needed SE Gearbox

Postby WASP » Tue Feb 25, 2014 12:07 pm

I have only just bought the car. The gears tend to grate when changing. The clutch feels ok though you have to push it to the floor. A lazy slave cylinder?
This may have been raised before however what oil/additive should I use in the box, it is strictly a road car, no competition.
The previous owner just changed the oil as part of the 100k service but I don't know what he used. I live on the Gold Coast so there are no cold starts.
Ideas please
Steven

Identify the problem first. If the previous owner just changed the oil it's probably not oil. Check out the salve cyclinder and see if it needs replacement.

isnt this the usual MX5 gearbox issues especially the 6 speed?

I wouldnt be too worried unless its still clunky after everything is nice and hot, just take it easy when cold?
Can you remember your first drive?

Should be ok cold too.

Maybe clutch dragging?

The 6 speeds tend to be quit nothcy, mine makes a sort of click noise on some gear changes. Its an odd gearbox, sometimes Ill get a nice smooth change and others it will require a little more force/effort and other times it will click into gear. I wouldnt say mine has ever crunched when changing gear but you definitely feel them engage haha. Mine has a new clutch, flywheel, clutch slave and master, line and fluid.

Look at the colour of the clutch fluid, see if it looks old. Also look up under the dash at the clutch pedal and see if there is any fluid leaking, also look at the clutch slave on the side of the gearbox for the same reason.

Id say what your feeling is the usual notchy 6 speed issue. Its a great gearbox but the 5 speeds definitely do have a better feel to them.

Miataroadster SSK makes the SE 6 speed much nicer.
