Hi All, just wanted to contribute my experience for future driver's with a similar problem. I did end up searching this forum as well as miata.net but there were several answers, so i ended up on a little goose chase.
Symptoms
-difficulty in engaging reverse gear
-no difficulty engaging forward gears
Check
-check for clutch fluid wetness near clutch master reservoir and hose leading from it
Problem
-leaking clutch fluid hose coming from the clutch master reservoir
Solution
-replace the leaking clutch fluid hose
What I did end up doing was changing the transmission fluid which resulted in a slicker shift, but no improvement engaging reverse. Also, unfortunately clutch fluid got leaked onto my firewall which is not so good for the paint. Live and learn!
