New Radiator for 2000 NB

Postby pipdog » Thu Sep 12, 2013 9:17 pm

I have looked at some of the posts about radiators, but they are not much help. I need to replace mine, as it is leaking where the plastic top meets the aluminium core. There are quite a few on ebay. Some are cheap, some expensive. Some have a core of more than 16mm thickness, so I am concerned about whether they fit without lots of cutting, pushing and shoving. Some reviews suggest to steer clear of certain brands and companies.

I would really like some advice on the best radiator to fit, with a price up to about $200. I appreciate that you get what you pay for, but my local (rip-off) radiator "expert" wants $280, but would not tell me what brand the radiator would be. I would be happy with plastic/aluminium, or all aluminium. I am on South Coast NSW.

Thanks in anticipation.

The 42mm core all alloy Cooling Pro/ASI radiators will fit with no cutting/modification.
Where are you on the coast? I'm at Ulladulla and I have a 42mm Cooling Pro fitted.

52mm will be on the big side to fit comfortably, I got my 42mm from MX5 Mania. It was $290 delivered 2 years ago.

Email the seller. He is likely to have the smaller one as well.

52mm will fit fine in a NB8A, a little tight in a NB8B.

There are 42mm radiators available on ebay, do a search for
aluminum radiator Mazda Miata MX5 98-05 42mm

There are numerous threads on the ASI Aluminum radiators on here.
Vast majority have not had any issues with them

Get a 42mm ASI. Can only think of two forumites that had the faintest of leaks from their new ASI & in both cases the supplier immediately replaced the radiator without requiring return of the other one.

Have used ASI and Cooling Pro 42mm radiators with no real issues. I would say the ASI was marginally easier to fit.

Do it once and forget about it. An ally radiator will last as long as the car.
