Glued the filter to my ol' PVC reducer (thanks hks_kansei) and lengthened the hose between the AFM and filter with a 3 inch silicone straight pipe I had laying about. It all looked pretty tacky, so I threw some spare thermo-wrap around the non-silvery bits to make it look a bit better for a photo...but I think I'll leave it like that for a while.
Been driving her about all day to try and find a flaw, but none found so far. Has plenty of space between the strut brace now and I can't feel any reduction in performance for having the filter so far from the AFM. (I have a reliable source to thank for that!)
Piccy!

(Please ignore the filthy engine bay and the dirty old extractors..they'll be the first to go once I've done my suspension, brakes and wheels.)
Thanks all for your help!
