NEED INFO ENGINE CONVERSION 2001 (1.8SVT) INTO 89 SHELL

Postby KIMO » Sat May 05, 2012 1:08 am

Good evening all,

Been a member for awhile now, got lots of help from this forum numerous time b4, thank you all.

I recently got myself an NA6 stock, love it.
It is old; rattle at 2800rpm probably heat-shield, but drive well.

Also recently purchased a 2001 unrepairable mx5 at a very reasonable price.
My questions are;

1. Can I install the 2001 engine into my NA6?
2. Can I also install the 6 speed gearbox into my NA6?
3. Can I install the 2001 gauge cluster into my NA6? did some reading online said possible but difficult with wiring?!
4. I will definitely need the new soft top and brakes for the NA6.
5. What else can i salvage from the 2001 model?

I actually wont be installing myself; no mechanical skill or tool. Thinking MX5 PLUS in Brisbane. Anyone got any other suggestion?

Also, I will be offering many parts that i do not require at mate rate or free in the near future.

Thanks again,
KIMO

I have done the same thing. Look at my build. I used everything I could- motor, box, diff, brakes, brake and fuel lines, abs brake system, full wiring loom, dash, carpet, etc, etc. There would be about 4 days labour.

others will advise what needs to be done to cover the legals and possibility of engineering certificates. Some folks do mods which are not legal and then strike a problem with registration departments insurers etc. You would be wise to get a quote on what it will cost and then add a contingency.

1. Physically it's a bolt in job.
2. As above
3. Yes, wiring could be difficult, but assuming you have the whole donor car, I'd suggest moving the entire loom across to make it much simpler and plug and play.
4. Is that a question? The new softop will foit, but you'll need to move the whole convertible frame not just the cloth covering - straightforward job. Brakes are also straight forward.
5. As lightyear said - almost everything! Easy things would be what youve already mentioned plus seats.

It's a reasonable sized job, and I'd say an MX5 specialist would be your best bet - They will know the right ways to do it quickly and properly.

As already mentioned, check legalities. In most states the engine will be fine as it is a minimal capacity change and will retain all relevant emission controls. Brakes seem to be a different sroty, most states require certification even if youre just going to later model bolt on upgrades...
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.
