radiator & fans

I have been having slight overheating at times so thinking it was the fan went to check. surprise!!! fine crack about 2" long on top of the tank from the cap.
1/ Why is there one fan on the motor side of the radiator (presume this is for air-con as it worked with the air-con switched on.
The other looks smaller is on the front side of the radiator.

2/ option one have a new plastic tank fitted $80-$100
option two get all aluminium radiator 42mm or 52mm

Get a new alloy radiator, probably the easiest solution. Doesn't take long, give yourself an hour or so to take your time and run some new coolant through the system and burp out any air.

Not sure what you were asking with question 1 and 2, once you have a working radiator the stock fans should be adequate.

Don't know what you mean about 1 fan on each side of the radiator, AFAIK all NAs/NBs had both fans on the motor side of the radiator.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Not sure what is going on with your fans, they are all mounted on the engine side.

Get a 42mm radiator from these guys:

It is really really easy to do. An hour if you take your time. I did mine on my NB in about 20 minutes.

I was lucky that I did not need to remove my under tray as the clamp around the bottom hose was pointing in a conveniant direction that I could loosen it from the top.

There is a hole in the under tray under the drain bung. Remove the radiator cap so when you dump the fluid it does not draw the fluid from the expansion tank....just a bit more conveniant not emptying the whole system. Drain it in to a clean container so you can reuse it, you will need a bit extra to refill as the system holds a bit more with the thicker radiator.

Unplug the fans but no need to remove...note your system has been messed with so you will probably need to remove the front fan.

Pop the top and bottom hose off.

Couple of nuts n bolts at the top to undo that hold the radiator to the slam panel.

Just lift it straight up to remove it.

Transfer fans and mounting hardware to the new radiator and just drop it back in to place and you are done!

What would be the benefit the ASI radiator with twin fans and shroud ?

Better cooling and no plastic end tanks to crack.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

a proper fitting, all-encompassing shroud ensures the fans perform effectively at sucking heat out of the radiator.
