Catch can recommendations?

Postby timk » Tue Feb 14, 2012 12:49 pm

Hi guys,

Can you recommend a particular oil catch can? I have had a look at a few and most of them seem to be completely empty inside, is this the norm? When I say empty I mean no channelling/spiralling at all...

I just want something effective to put between the hotside port before returning to the crossover tube.

Cheers

A lot of guys simply add steel wool to the "empty" containers so that's what I did.

Do you worry about it ending up in your intake?

Tim, check out the catch cans from 42 design drafts. They're expensive but well thought out. Supplier is in Brisbane too.

Another option is a can from extreme motorsport on the north side. They have cans with breathers or you can get them to make a custom (ish) one so you have the ports on the right side etc. Not too expensive either.

You ideally want some baffle or filter to slow the vapor down, and allow the air/oil to separate. Empty ones wont really do anything.

Hope that helps

No, mine vents through the breather - I figure I catch the bus to work 5 days a week and only drive my car on weekends so I've earned enough carbon credits to do this.

Send Davex3 a PM on what he does to prevent this. I'm pretty sure he uses heavy duty steel wool, not the fine stuff so it shouldn't be a problem.

Use the stainless steel pan scrubbers as they are not made up of lots of strands / chunks.

Dont go to mad with it otherwise the oil wont drain through it quick enough and it will back up out of the top.

Emissions aside, I assumed the vacuum from the intake would help draw out any positive crankcase pressure?

Not having a stab, I want to understand how this all works! :)

I bought an 'empty' catch can and added my own baffle. It allows the air to circulate whilst catching any fine mist there may be... Not too many companies make a proper catch can it seems!
