Different oils? Which filter?

History: I bought my 2001 NB8B at 112,000kms almost a year ago. 120,000 got it serviced at MX5 Factory. Its now at 129,500kms. Reading the service schedule the 130k service is just an oil+filter change which i will do this weekend. No idea what oil is currently in there.

Driving conditions: Melbourne 5c-38c (F*** going out if its hotter than that), Mostly aggresive commuting (sees the redline once or twice a week), occasional hard driving days out at the hills (once a month), Track days 1-4 times a year but dont worry about this as ill probably change the oil again by the time i get back to the track again.

1. Based on reading this morning it seems a 10W-40 is best for our climate/engines. Is this correct?

2. Should i just buy the OEM Mazda filter, or are there better alternatives?

3. Will i see any real benefit by spending double or tripple the amount on "premium" oils. E.G-

4. Where should i buy from? Preferably along bell street or a small detour off bell street.

Asking what oil people prefer is going to give you 1000 different answers.

I try to stick to the bigger brands, but buy what's on special.
I've got a bottle of Motul waiting to go in, simply because it was on sale for the same price as Magnatec.


As for Filters, I've used the normal Ryco ones without issue.
Next change I'm putting on a "Drift" brand filter, but that's purely because it has a nut on the end to make removal easier next time.


Where to buy:
Once you've decided on oil brand, and filter brand, it doesnt really matter.
Castrol sold from Supercheap will be no different to Castrol at Autobarn.

Please tell us where you got the Drift oil filter with nut on the end :shock:

Autobarn.

"Drift" is one of their silly in-brand things. They do all those shitty blue pod filters etc.

I've been using Mazda supplied filters without any problems for years ... but last year they changed to some pretty low qual vietnamese ones in the OEM packet. So I wouldn't recommend them any more.

I'd go Ryco.

Unfortunately ryco isn't the company they use to be. All their mainstream filters are manufactured off shore now, and quality has slipped. I refuse to use them on anything of mine at all now after seeing manufacturing faults and recalls on their filters since this has happened.

I would use either a genuine Mazda filter, or if you want something a little more fancy, a K & N item. The Drift branded ones appear to look the goods from the outside, but I can't comment on quality as I have cut one apart to have a look to date.
