any trick to getting T2 torsen half shafts in?

Postby plohl » Fri Jan 20, 2012 2:41 pm

Just wondering if there is any trick, or just brute force to get the half shafts into the TorSen T2 diff.
Cheers,

I'm assuming you are referring to NA stub axles?, not NB longer axles?
Regardless, there is a circlip on the shaft that goes into the diff that may or may not need to be removed for easier fitment. Sorry, it's been ages since I've done it last time, but AFAI remember, it was relatively easy sliding in and out.

Is the shaft not going in at all?, ie. the splines on the shaft not meshing with the splines on the diff?
If not, then vague memory says that there might be a difference in the number of splines between NA6, NA8, NB axles vs Torsen (and other) diff splines.
I'm sure someone else can confirm...

Quite sure there's a difference in spline count between NA6 and NA8/NB

26 vs 28 rings a bell??

And I've heard that the SE had a different one again? (not sure on this at all)

Anyway, the circlip stays, it's what hold the shaft in the diff.

Without having done it, but being told how, you should just push it in. The face of the diff splines is tapered so as you push, it should squeeze the circlip.
Once it begins you'll eventually hear/feel the circlip pop back put as it lines up with the corresponding notch inside the diff.

PM Flycasta if you need help, he's a great guy, and knows his stuff.

Make sure the circlip is not splayed out, it needs to be tight in the shaft so it can slide into the flange in the diff centre which has a slight taper. If need be carefully remove the circlip and gently squeeze the clip to close the gap and refit and retry.
I'll pm about the other .

Thanks guys!

I wasn't very forceful when I tried. I should have been clearer, it is a type 2 torsen with the half shafts on the drive shafts. I'll check it out again tomorrow. Hopefully i'll have the car running by sunday night!

when i did it a few months ago they were quite easy to slide in provided the splines were lined up (using one hand and not forcing at all it more slide in with a steady pressure).
you'll feel it click into place.

that being said it was with an se diff and single piece axles.

the hard part was getting the hub end in.

Yeah, i spoke to jason from mx5+ and he said do the hub side first. I got them in on the weekend. Hub side in first, and semi creative use of a pry bar.

How did you originally manage to get the big brass hub nut off?

Mine won't budge.
I've knocked out the dent that stops them shifting, but there's no movement no matter how much force I'm putting on them.
