Na6 running rich and choking me in the cabin.

Postby Pokmx5 » Tue Nov 15, 2011 10:52 pm

Hey guys,

I recently gutted my cat, i had some accelaration issues which after reading many forum post pointed to a screwed cat. So i took to it with a hammer and cleaned it out. Put it back together and fixed my acceleration issue. Sounds alittle tinny but still smooth acceleration. NOW i have an issue that i have a feeling im running really rich as i can smell a whole lot of smoke to the point taht it drys my throat out and waters my eyes :(.

I would drive and as soon as i come to a stop i can smell it. I took it to exhaust shop and he had a look to see if managed to maybe not put it back on correctly but he couldnt see anything wrong.

Any suggestions on how to fix this issue. Previous to this the car didnt produce any smoke.

Cheers.

I'm not so sure Dann, I mean yeah it sounds like it's related to the cat because it wasn't there before and now is. But I used to have a gutted stock cat for ages until I bought a hiflow same diameter as the rest of the system.
The gutted cat ran fine and couldn't smell anything like this in the cabin. The only thing I can think of is that what you hammered the guts out of it, maybe you pierced something and there is an exhaust leak somwhere. Could be around the flanges or godknows where. That way, when you stop the car it rises straight up and into the cabin.

But I have to agree with what Dann will inevitably say as a reply to my comment; just buy a new cat.

Good luck!

where can i get stock cat from? cause all i can find is ones that are larger internal diameter. What would happen if i was to put a larger diameter on the stock system.

How is your petrol consumption?

If it's running rich, you are probably getting crappy mileage out of a tank...yes?

If you are getting crap mileage, and assuming you are running stock engine management/injectors etc, the problem is probably either a bad O2 sensor or a bad coolant temp sensor. Maybe a bad AFM...

yea i barely manage 350 a tank. So 02 sensor or coolant temp. I'll look into that asap.
