Problems with selecting 1st gear in a 2005 NC Ltd Edition

Postby toymx5 » Mon Jul 25, 2011 10:24 pm

Hi,

My brother has just brought his first MX-5, a 2005 NC Limited Edition 6 speed with 70,000 k's on it. It's drives beautifully but we both have noticed the same issue and that is that 1st gear is difficult to select whether cold or hold. The selector feels very rubbery and vague when trying to select 1st but is great in all the other gears. I've owned a NA and now a NB8A and as eveyone knows their 5 speeds are so precise and direct, is this problem common with NC's ? If so is there a fix ?

Thanks,

No not common. My 2007 NC has 53,000km and selection of any gear is rifle bolt precise hot or cold.

How long since the hydraulic fluid was flushed? - should be at least every two years. It could also be a sign of wear in the gearbox and/or selectors due to previous owner neglect/abuse. It may also be due for a transmission oil change.

Thanks JBT !

I'll check the service history (all from Mazda dealer) to see if the oil has been changed. I doubt it's abuse/wear, the car is pristine and I've met the previous owner who doesn't seem the type to have thrashed it.
