MX5 Mania Cold Air Intake

Postby ak_perth » Mon Oct 18, 2010 4:13 pm

Hi,

I've just fitted a Mania Cold Air Intake to my 94 Clubman. What a brilliant noise it makes, reminds me of older cars with Twin 40 webbers fitted. You can cruise around at low revs and not even notice it, apart from a slight hiss. If you want to hear the full crescendo just plant your right foot, and you are rewarded with a highly addictive deep growly roar!

Cutting the hole in the firewall was a bit nerve racking, but you use an existing factory drilled hole as your centre guide, you cant go wrong. If anyone in Perth is thinking of getting one i can lend you the hole cutter i bought from Bunnings and save you $100 :D

Cheers

AK

Hi justinmx5,

It's hard to tell if there is a gain in performance. When i first bought the car i fitted a K&N pod filter to it, which made the throttle response a bit better and it felt like the car was a bit faster. But with all mods that make your car louder it makes it sound like it's going faster! If you went from a stock air filter to the Mania one you might feel more of a difference. I was a bit disappointed with the pod filter because i was not getting as loud an induction roar as i hoped. Also i hadn't fitted a heat shield so i knew that it was drawing hot air all the time.

That's why i bought the Mania Cold Air Intake, after reading what people had said about it being very loud and drawing cold air. To be honest i think it pulls a bit stronger mid range but in reality i dont know if that is true. Mania have dyno tested it and claim power increases up to 12 kw (that's 16 bhp in old money, sorry i'm a pom) which is alot. I have read that it has more of an effect power wise on the 1.6 than the 1.8

Whether or not it has gained in performance i dont really care. All i care about is that it feels faster (due to the noise) and it sounds amazing. The induction roar truly is addictive as my wallet will testify. I seem to be visiting the petrol station more often, i just cant stop myself holding it on half throttle and then flooring it!

Cheers

If you don't mind me asking how much did it cost to fit?

It's simple to fit, so i did it myself. The only cost involved is buying the holesaw which you'll need to cut the hole in the firewall. The actual holesaw was about $50 and the holesaw "arbor" (with the drill bit centre guide) which you'll need to attach the holesaw to your drill was another $50. It was all bought from Bunnings.

Cheers

Going by the power output from the last Club Dyno day in NSW, there is not much difference in RWKW (anywhere from 1-4kw only), but all who had it done say it makes the car more responsive and as already mentioned, sound really good.

These CAI's may not show much difference on the dyno as far as their maximum power is concerned, but I do think they increase the mid-range power which means faster acceleration.

You have to look closely at the dyno graph to see it, but I think you will see the power rise faster in the mid section and then flatten out at the end to be about the same maximum kW as a standard car.

But you're right, they do sound fantastic and they're worth the money just from that standpoint.

I want to put the mania cai into my nb series 2 mx5 but the abs line gets in the way :(
Is there a way to still install the mania cai into the series 2 nb mx5's?

to my knowledge the NB8B can't fit them fro the reason you said.

NA has no issue
NB8A can fit, it just may rub on the air con condenser a little, and needs a hold drilled into the intake to cater for the Air temp sensor.

PM Stu, He has an NB8B with the MX5 Factory CAI. It's essentially the same idea as the mania unit, it just uses flexi pipe and has a much better filter.
