hey all,
This has puzzled me for a while but i've just thought that it was normal when I bought the engine. Every oil change i tend to put more than the required amount of oil approx 4.25L. My manual says dry is 4L, refill and filter is 3.75L and refill only is 3.6L. I tend to replace the oil and filter which is what we all do i guess during our regular service.
Now as the topic suggests my question is to the length of the dipstick. I noticed that mine was shorter than a friends NA6 dipstick. I assumed this was the norm because its a smaller engine, different layout/longer dipstick shaft, mine being an imported engine(from mx5plus) etc etc. But now looking back, if my dipstick was replaced with the wrong one before I bought the engine, being shorter than normal, then you could understand why I added an extra 500ml to get to the full mark. Does anyone else fill more than the recommended to get to full?
Could someone with an NA8 measure the length of theirs from the tip to the edge that stops when you push it down(pic attached) that would be greatly appreciated. Mine measured at 441mm. I didn't measure my friends dipstick so if the NA6 boys could measure theirs also just as a comparison.
cheers
dipstick length

Re: dipstick length
Hi,
Mine is 457mm approx in my NA8.
The dipstick is not the original one though. When i had some work done on the car recently the mechanic broke the yellow ring you use to pull it out. Apparently they become quite brittle. He replaced it with a new one at no cost to me. It has "BPE8" in embossed letters at the top of the yellow shaft.
Cheers

Yup, approx 45cm from tip to o-ring for BP, approx 39cm from tip to o-ring for B6.

It's the old story----my dipstick is longer than yours!
