Woodruff Key Long nose crank

Postby Dweezle » Fri Jul 02, 2010 8:53 am

I am doing a timing belt, water pump seals etc change on my long nose Crank.

I ordered the key and crank bolt from MAZDA and they arrived yesterday.

Image

The key physically looks different and is a different length to the one i took out.

I brought this up with them, but all they would say is "Its the correct part for that Vin number".

I just want to make sure, even the bolt looks a lil different.

Perhaps MAZDA changed the design a litle bit?
The Key just worries me becuase it is shorter and doesnt have anywhere near as big a wedge at one end.

Hope this can be cleared up.

Thanks in advance!!

Thanks Clubman. :D

yeah, i still think they have given me the wrong Key.
The keyway on my crank has the inverted wedge shape at the end to match the key i took out.. DUH!!

I am now worried the bolt they gave me is the wrong one also.
I will measure it when i get home, and compare to the link you sent.

Just really annoying that MAZDA have seemingly given me the wrong part, i noticed, went back, and still was told its correct.

Bet they would do nothing if i installed the wrong key, had crank failure and asked to be reimbursed.

GRRRRRR!!

keep in mind it may be the right part for the vin No. but our cars are getting on.
I'd check if there wasn't an engine swap at one stage or another.

Then again....i once was accused of not telling them that i had a 1.6 when I ordered a aircon belt for a 1989 Mazda MX5

It looks totally wrong.
Has your car had a difft engine put in? (Thus it does not match description on Mazdas computers).

My car is a MALIBU Gold.
91 model, and to the best of my knowledge.. "i am a NOOB to the GOLD.. HAHA".. They all came with the 8 slot, Long nosed Crank. Which mine has.

The engine number matches the engine in the car also.

So i am assuming it is the original engine.

I might drop into MAZDA again on the way home and try and talk to someone else that will hopefully be more usefull.

I physically showed the guy the 2 keys, he looked and went, "Correct part for correct vin" like some sort of robot. :x

Better try and make sure the bolt is correct also.
Does anyone know the part number of the long nose crank Key?

Woodruff Key Long nose crank

Postby Dweezle » Fri Jul 02, 2010 3:25 pm

Thanks Russel.
Mazda are stumped also.
That's the part number they gave me.
But the key is different.
There is also the same part number with a "c" at the end. So there ordering that in.

Mazda also tried to tell me that the crank design has never changed.. That's worrying!!!!

Woodruff Key Long nose crank

A little more Internet scrounging and I have come across this.

http://forum.miata.net/vb/archive/index ... 81188.html

Seems Mazda has changed there parts so all 1.6 keys are the same.

There is no wedge section anymore. It stops just before it.
Apparently it should be fine?

Kinda worrying but I suppose it's just an aligning tool? As long as it's a new bolt up to correct torque and the key slots in right it should be fine??

Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I might just reuse my old key.

Don't take that too seriously. They are obviously talking out of thiere rectum but remember they are only workers. what would they know about the desingn process about any car unless they are enthusiast like yourself.

they need to know about every Mazda ever made not just a 1990's mx5. There is far too much other relevant info they need to keep in thier head.

I thought it was just me .. the orig key on my short nose crank falls short of the pulley face by about 5mm , every damaged crank I have seen seam to have a section of keyway that has not been damaged at motor end .
My solution was to put a longer key in that ended flush with pulley face so the key uses the entire length of keyway
and cant slip back towards pulley .
If mazda are using the same key for long and short nose cranks , looks like my mod wasent so strange afterall ..

I once had an "EXPERT" at Bunnings repeatedly tell me that a phillips head and a Pozi drive screwdriver bit were the same, until I showed him the difference. So don't trust what a spare parts guy tells you about a part, they might know what the right part number is, but know Jack sh*t, if it actually is the right part.

Cheers
