Hi Everyone
Based in Wollongong and use the NA6 as my daily commute to either Sydney CBD or Waterfall, catching a train from there. I do easy miles but enjoy the push through Mt Ousley, both heading to work and coming home.
Approximately 3 - 4 weeks ago Mx 5 Mania installed the CAI, headers and a hi-flow exhaust whilst completing some insurance work to the hood and the interior( a result of a break in) BTW really happy with the gains from the CAI, headers and exhaust. Timing is advanced to 12, running 98 Vortex, no pinging and very happy with the exhaust note = lots of fun to drive.
The problem I have is that since having the work done on the car (CAI, headers, hi flow exhaust) I am going through 2 - 3L of oil a week. I confirm that there are no visible oil leaks under the bonnet. This has been degreased, it's clean top to bottom. Furthermore, using 2-3L of oil a week you'd expect to see lots of oil and splash back down the underside of the car. I have none of this. When I start the car cold I have a blueish smoke until the car is warm then it disappears.... I do see a little smoke when i drive hard and change gears to overtake but I cant determine the colour as I am focused on the road Regardless, there isn't much smoke. The exhaust tail pipe is black, wet carbon inside & where I start the car in the morning I have either oil / carbon / condensation splatters on the floor of the garage.
I thought the problem may be rings, valve stem oil seals, etc but have been advised that a faulty PCV can cause an abnormal use of oil. I checked the PCV, it rattles as expected, the air flows freely from the crank case side but does flow a little from the throttle body side. I am wondering if this is a faulty PCV? I am using my mouth to blow through the PCV.
When I removed the hose that connects the PCV to the cam cover and the throttle body I detected a small amount of oil in the hose and on the male connector of the throttle body. As it's the long weekend I returned the PCV to the vehicle so I can drive it for now but does anyone have any suggestions...
I may have an aftermarket PCV. Are PCV's PCV's? Do I need something 'extra special' in the way of a PCV due to the CAI and the extra vacuum?
Do you think it's the PCV? or should I be looking at something else. I really don't want to have to purchase a reconditioned motor, but if I had to go down that path can anyone suggest where I can get a good motor and install done?
Looking forward to your comments
Thanks
Patrick

Would be worth doing a leakdown test to check compression.

Try unplugging the PCV hoses, plug-up the tubes on the intake plenum and intake pipe, and install PCV filters (those mini pod-filers) on the cam cover.
If you still notice smoke on start-up and hard acceleration, then it's NOT the PCV system.
It'll be a new one for me if a faulty PCV causes that much oil usage.
Have you looked inside the plenum to see if it's filthy with oil?
