Radiator Cowl Cover?

Hi guys,

Im considering getting a radiator cowl cover for my NB8B...

Are they worth it? Or are they really just a bit of engine bay bling?

i don't think you really need them unless you track your car quite a bit and/or you still have the old radiator.

Well Ive still got the original radiator (00 NB8B with 140,000kms)...

My mechanic was having a look at the car on the weekend, and mentioned that he thought it was running a little hot. Granted it was straight after a 2 hour drive on a 38 degree day though.

I was just thinking perhaps this might help?

I find it an invaluable platform to hold your beer /tools when working. :wink:

Can't really say if there's any difference, but the car has never overheated so can't really compare.

Only difference I noticed with my NA6 that I added one to was that the A/C worked better

which proves that the air is now flowing through the condensor (and thus, also the radiator), rather than up and over the top of it.

they are a good thing.

i would just save the pennies and buy a new rad before the oem one with the plastic top cracks...

Yep, as long as it's not a huge cost for it. Mine was cheap enough, bought used & made of plastic. It is a handy place to put tools on, certainly.

I might be wrong but I think the seal under the bonnet keeps the air from going up and over
However Mr mazda is much smarter than I am and he put the cover in later cars, maybe he needed somewhere to put his beer.
I would like to make one out of alumimium when I get round to it one day

did you have the factory plastic cover before you had one fitted (assuming that you upgraded to one of the metal versions)?

correct me if i'm wrong, but the seal actually runs along the bottom of the front edge of the bonnet. the cowl cover is to prevent air passing through the 'mouth' in the front bar, then going up and over the radiator rather than through it.

The NA6 don't come with them from factory so there all aftermarket really (except retrofitted OEM ones). Mine was plastic & came from MX5 Mart NZ.

Might be a moot point anyways as I haven't seen an aftermarket cover made for NB's. Happy to be corrected.
