na6 radiator problem

Postby charlie_91 » Tue Feb 02, 2010 8:09 pm

hey i tried to search this but didnt really have any luck..

my problem is that i have to travel 100km for work and 100km back.. the mx5 seems to go fine on the way down there,
but when i get home in the arvo my overflow tank is bubbling like crazy then dies down after a minute..
the car doesnt look like its overheating at all as it sits about a third of the way up..

should this be something i should worry about ?

also its not getting to the point where it bubbles over and im not losing any coolant..

any help would be much appreciated..

cheers

I would maybe start with getting your radiator cap checked.

You say it doesnt seem to be overheating but it could just be a system pressure blowoff thing. It could simply be that you go uphill for the last part of your journey home from work where as you may coast the final part of your trip to work - thereby only seeing the extra pressure build up when you get home due to loading up the engine more (and the outside temp may be a few degrees higher at home time).

Its also a cheap place to start :D

i checked the cap and the seal is fine and it also springs back fine...

that does make sense for me though cos i go up and down a few smallish hills around where i live..

It will have nothing to do with what driving you do- clearly you have a problem. You may or may not know the history of the car - eg how old the radiator is, when it was last flushed etc. I suggest you take it to a radiator repairer. You might be able to save a little by taking the radiator out yourself- if that is convenient but get them to look first and see if they id the prob. Radiators do of course get blocked if old and not maintained but they all have a life.
The beauty of a pro doing it is that you may be able to have it done while you are working.

the radiator is pretty much brand new.. i think i may have figured it out.. the guy that had it before the last had a big sound system and the last guy ripped it all out and did a bit of diy wiring with the thermo.. so all the wiring was pretty much f*cked which fell apart hence the thermo not working..

so ill let u no how it goes its if i get anything done

cheers
