Restrictor on an NB turbo engine?

Postby SKYHI » Mon Jan 18, 2010 11:21 am

Hey guys,

Has anyone ever fitted a restrictor to an NB turbo engine to see what affect it has on power and torque?

The CAMS regs for a 2F car stipulate that a 34mm restrictor needs to be fitted, just wondering if anyone has done anything similar?

Hi Paul,

Kerry Finn ran with us at QR once in his Silver Targa car (think it's an SE), perhaps it had a restrictor in it because from memory it wasn't competitive with the regular 2F cars. Have a chat to Kerry.

Cheers,
Julian

It's been done before. Does require some tuning to get it right though. Luckily the Sp turbo is quite small so the restrictor isn't a big a problem as it would be on a larger turbo.

Just got me thinking. If someone had a road registered SE or SP "replica" and wanted to get it logbooked as a 2F car, would it be in anyway competitive with a restrictor and without having to build an engine to cope with 20 pound of boost?

I was told you have to run a stock intercooler as well. The 2F regs don't explicitly state you cant change it. However it does mention all the piping is free specifically. I'd be curious to see if you get one competitive as well.

Just get one of the 'special' turbo restrictors Toyota designed for their WRC Celicas in the 90's, and everything will be sweet

The SE turbo is even smaller than the SP one so the restrictor would not make a huge difference...I know of a really good SE race car for sale...
NC Roadie, NC Racey, ND Racey….and a 30AE

Plus several others in the bone yard...

DriftFury had a restrictor on his race car and it was still making decent power.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

No doubt it's a good car but I'd like a road registered car, hence the reason I asked in your thread :)

Plan B...buy my car and a cheap NB roadie swap over all the good bits then sell the unregisterable one...simple.

MX5DriftFury still HAS a restrictor on his NA race car (SPdrivetrain) and it is an absolute work of art.....designed and built by himself.

it is not a built motor so to speak (i.e NO Carillo Rods, NO Arias pistons etc) ...if i recall it has 220+ rwkw and 500+ nm torque (at 2500 rpm i think) and runs all season no problems with 140kg of ballast to bring it up to minimum 1200kg weight in his category. Standard torsen, standard drive shafts, standard 6spd that keeps chewing up 4th gear due to the torque and the gear width...hopefully it will see the track again in 2010.

Hmm big brake conversion - the look on other drivers faces when your 1200kg carout brakes and out accelerates their 650kg fibreglass everything sr20 supertourer engined v8 supercar gearboxed brembo/AP racing stopping full on racer - priceless.....

For a budget racer - that is a trick little car - i wonder if he will sell it??

Cant wait to see it again, this time with the exhasut shooting flames out the side of the body just in front of the rear wheel.....

TCR if you are serious about getting a 36mm restrictor - drop me a pm and I will give you MX5DriftFurys email - just dont say "can you make me a restrictor - I need it for an event in a month" cause he has a lot on the go at once.
