Locking nuts for turbo manifold

Came across this appears interesting, looks useful for turboed 5s.

These Stage 8 locking nuts are a brilliant design. Tighten up the nut as usual, then slip the locking tab over top and use the C-clip to hold it. Voila, a nut that cannot possibly loosen. If you need to remove it, pop the clip off and remove the tab. Simple and effective. We recommend this hardware on the turbo-to-manifold studs for any Miata that sees track use. Available as an option on our turbo kits.

Locking nuts for turbo manifold

Nice idea but it'd be a bitch to fit to an SP. It's almost impossible to get to one of the nuts with your hand.

Locking nuts for turbo manifold

You fit them off the car then fit the turbo/manifold as a solid item. The nissan silvia studs, nuts and locking tabs work in a similar, more affordable and locally available way. Good idea though - guess they haven't seen the nissan gear.

That's exactly what i have done to my SP.
Put on the Sylvia nuts and tabs etc.

They've been on for around 12,000k's now, including a few drift days etc., and the nuts have not loosened one iota.
Unlike when it was standard and the tightening of the nuts had to done at virtually every service.

Locking nuts for turbo manifold

After replacing my turbo mounting studs and nuts late last year 3 of them have stayed tight, the three I can get some decent leverage on, but the one I need to get to from under the car with a short spanner keeps coming loose. It only loosens about 1/16th of a turn but I can tell when it comes loose because the turbo spooling noise is louder when the car is cold. As everything gets hot and expands the gap closes up and everything is quiet again. I crawl under the car, tighten it up again and everything is sweet.......for a few thousand km. I tightened it up before I went to Adelaide in January and had to do it again when I changed the oil this week. Mind you, it had a big workout through the Adelaide hills so I'm not surprised it worked itself loose so quickly. I think I'm lucky because the bracket that holds the heat shield on acts like a locking tab for two of the nuts and the 3rd one is easy to get a decent go at with a spanner but if I ever need to replace the turbo again I'll be getting all the Nissan hardware. Touch wood the unobtainium studs are still holding together.
