From memory that is what I did. The other tip they give about locking the cams in place with two spanners and a vice grip is worth doing also.

John, Keith Tanner suggests the method you describe in his book Miata Performance Projects, as well as another method involving the fabrication of a 'special tool'. Drill two holes near the end of a flat metal bar & then cut a notch out of the side between the two holes allowing the bar to be bolted to the front of the crank cog.
