Rattling Sound from Newly Installed Short Shifter

What sort of short shifter is it?
Some are made without the teflon slide that the dowel pin runs in,
if it is all metal and no teflon guide then it will rattle no matter what you do
some of the cheap ones don't have the teflon
When you say you replaced a plastic bush with a metal one was it a tapered on the goes under the larger sphere of the shifter?

and is it a 5spd or 6spd?

Basicly you shouldn't be replacing any factory parts just adding aftermarket ones
you should still have the mazda spring loaded bottom one and the smaller top one you just have to fit the internal spacer under them adn then the external one on top of the turret

have you got any pictures of the parts you bought? without having to take them out again?

Your upper shaft is probably disconnecting from the lower shaft.

Try pulling the knob and console off and twisting the upper part of the shaft (where the knob goes).

If it is loose, unscrew it all the way and put some Loctite (or at least superglue) on the shaft thread and screw it back together.

Apparently some new shafts in the short shift kits do not have the collar on that the OE one's have but are just a straight shaft.The collar is filled with(rubber?) noise suppression material to stop vibration, and this may a POSSIBLE source or amplifyer of noise.

Check that your stick is a two-piece design or not.

Also check that the three bolts that hold the flange onto the gearstick housing is done up tight as they do come loose. Again use a threadlocker on these.
