Does anyone know how the oxygen sensor in the NA8 is calibrated? And whether it is dependent on the exhaust gas temperature? My oxygen sensor is the 4 wire type.
The reason I ask is the exhaust shielding around the oxygen sensor area of the exhaust has broken off on one side. This causes a slightly irritating vibration at a certain RPM. I am tempted to just remove the exhaust shielding but am reluctant to do so in case it affects my oxygen sensor's output.
Thanks in advance.

i can't see how the shielding will have any affect on the sensor whatsoever.
however there are some other reasons to be reluctant about removing the shield. it's there for a reason (to keep heat out of your engine bay / air intake) .
maybe just buy a replacement heat sheild, should be able to find one from a wrecker.

what he said ^
removing the shield will not affect the o2 sensor, only the engine bay temperature.

Well my thinking is that without the heat shield the exhaust gases lose more heat to the atmosphere therefore causing the oxygen content in the exhaust will be more dense than what the sensor is calibrated for.
Just to clarify, I am not referring to the heat shield around the headers in the engine bay, but rather two small pieces of heat shielding after the collector. These pieces are welded to the outer walls of the exhaust and has broken off on one side. At most removing them may increase my wheel arch temps and underbody temps but not by a huge amount since its exposed to free flowing air.

unless you have in import, there should only be one oxygen sensor. it is mounted in the engine bay just after the exhaust header shield ends, on the side closest to the firewall.
