Jap import engines

Postby Mactype » Mon Aug 11, 2008 5:42 pm

After Eastern Creek yesterday it appears I need a new engine - haven't pulled it down but going by the noises emitting from the block it ain't good.

Whilst I'm tossing up whether I break open the piggy bank and build something with some grunt. I figure I need something to tied me over, so have been ringing around re: second hand units.

Anything I should look for on these - Ichiban tell me they check for sludge and run all of the engines before they go out, along with offering a 3 month warranty for $900, so pricing is pretty reasonable. Any other places I should be looking?

Also, do the 1.8's have something on them so I can tell if their a 1.8 over a 1.6?

Have you tried our sponsor MX5 Mania?

As for the obvious differences between the NA B6 1.6 and NA BP 1.8, just off the top of my head would be:
1) Raised letters on the cam cover of the BP
2) CAS on exhaust side on BP

I think this is right but please confirm this for me guys.

My clubman went into mania July last year needing a new engine....picked it up mid november.......they dont often get decent engines in, and when they do ppl buy them rather quickly

coil pack (obviously) is on the intake side on a BP, and the front thermostat housing has a different orientation.

Mania don't have any in stock.

Thanks for getting me up to speed guys, I'd just hate to have a 1.6 delivered instead of a 1.8.

Might be time for a lightweight flywheel too....

Yup, I can confirm they have shipped an engine to Perth.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
