MX5 Factory - Pod Filters and Cold Air Intakes

Postby doogle » Thu Jun 12, 2008 12:53 pm

Hey all,
I've had my MX5 NA for about a year and am trying to do some simple maintenance. I've got a cold air intake from the MX5 factory which was put in by the previous owner

Tried calling the mx5 factory up but they're not too helpful unless you're offering them money :frown:
I have no idea when the pod filter was changed last and I read in the manual air filters are supposed to be changed yearly, but I have no idea of the pod that is needed :!:
Some questions...
- Does anyone else have this air intake?
- What size pod filter is required to change? 3\" flange diameter?
- Is there a generic size for the mx5 that should fit into this?
- Does the brand matter? K&N? Supercheap auto have the brand 'air hog' for 40% off at the moment so thats pretty tempting...

Thanks :D

Replace yearly? eek. Can't you just clean it?

Well I assume the manual is just talking about a panel filter.
I have no idea about how to clean it. For now I just want to replace it cause I have no idea how old it is.

Buy a K&N cleaning kit. Read the box.

Matty's correct.

Never had a problem with Dick and the crew at Mx-5 Factory. In fact my experiences with them has been the complete opposite.

i wouldn't mind going there either, but they're just a bit too far away so it would have to be big project that i can't do myself.

has anyone actually tried fitting a pod themselves and could share some knowledge?

i have one too , yes. you don't need to replace it yearly, as matty said just take the filter out and give it a clean.

what is the lifetime of a pod filter then? (sorry im new to this stuff :P ) surely you can't just keep cleaning it over and over...

K&N quote 1 million miles for theirs. I'm sure equivalents are similar. Don't worry about it.
