Gearbox worries

Postby stevesports » Mon Jun 09, 2008 1:24 pm

Yet again, i have more gearbox worries. This started happening last night when i decided to have a spirited run i.e: quick shifting.

it appears that the gears are making this faint whirring a rattling noise at part throttle. At full throttle there is no such sound however. Also, this only occurs in 2nd and 3rd gear. Did i strip a gear or something? my car is a NB8B with just an exhaust upgrade.

edit: also i have changed the gearbox oil to lightweight shockproof last month.

Steve, I have a very similar thing at low rpm/part throttle and I believe it to be a noisy thrust bearing.

When the car is in neutral at idle, try pushing the clutch in and see if the noise goes away and if it is making a whirring sound when the clutch is out. My driveline is silent when the clutch is out at idle, but makes a bit of noise when the clutch is pushed in.
When was the last time you had a clutch done and how many k's has it done on the current clutch?

I'd be very suprised if you have stripped/damaged any teeth on your gears with standard power unless you are very unforgiving with your driving style!

I will show you at the next Teem Garage meet what I mean.

For sure. I'll test it out later (i'm at work right now). I won't be doing teem garage this week because i have a work conference to attend to, but i'll be there next week.
