Surely the magnetic field generated around the coilpacks would be better than an old HDD magnet anyway. That would mean all the magnetic particles would be held on the underside of the cam cover.
All you'd have to do to change the oil and get all the particles out at the same time is to put the car on Bruce's rottisserie with the engine running, spin it upside down and kill the motor immediately and then drain it via the oil filler cap.
