Slightly dumb question,
can anyone tell me where to find the ECU in a '92 NA.

On the firewall on the passenger side, below the glove box. Take off the sill plate on the passenger side, peel back the carpet, remove the white polyfoam strip then the cover plate and voila!

If you were in the US that's where it would be.

Watch out for sharp edges on the cover over the ECU.

OK, I found the ECU but also found that an aftermarket connector has been wired into the loom.
It's a 6 pin connector with a 6 way short circuit plugged in. The wiring I can see is connected to the oxygen sensor lead and the red wire from the AFM. These 2 are joined and then go to the connector.
Anyone have any idea as to what this would be, I thought it could have been a piggyback ecu.

Could have been a piggyback or maybe a couple of components. e.g. The AFM would have been cut to insert an interceptor for tweaking the fuel. A take-off for the O2 sensor would have been for some sort of mixture display. Probably something like these:
