I recently picked up this faint whine that seems to be coming from my gearbox. It sounds similar to the type of sound a gearbox makes when it uses straight cut gears.
it appears to increase in pitch as i increase in RPM, and it is less obvious the higher the gear i am in.
for example, it is loudest in first gear, very faint in 2nd and i can't hear it in 3rd and higher.
Is it normal for the gearbox to do this?
btw this is a 2001 NB8B.
*edit* the noise is quite faint, even in 1st gear. I had to wind all the windows up with the top up, and make sure i am in a quietish area.
In addition, if i'm travelling at say 60k's and i try to put my car into first (which is not possible), but if i try and apply pressure, the car won't go into gear but it will make the same faint whine if i apply pressure to put it into first. Maybe it is the synchro's?
gearbox whine.
