Viscous LSD failure?

Postby CapitalF » Tue Oct 16, 2007 12:00 am

Hi all

Ive been researching the Viscous LSD in 90 Roadster further as in the total of 3 motorkhanas Ive done I've noticed the drive out of corners has diminished big time. (No - not just tyre wear)

My NA has done 110,000 ks and with three full (separate) days of wheelspin/handbrake action Im wondering if the following entry from Wikipedia has real merit....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limited_slip_differential#Viscous

It mentions how the early Roadsters had a known problem of the VLSD failing after about 60000miles or overheating the VLSD silicone fluid - making the diff effectively open. I may have been approaching the first and prompted the second with the motorkhanas???

Has anyone else heard of this and if so can someone point me in the direction of suppliers of replacement clutch packs (or is it VLSD centre) in SE QLD? I liked the hookup it used to have! :-)

Thx
Peter

It's actually the viscous jelly inside that goes bad. There are some places in the UK who can replace it and pump it in at greater pressure for a tighter diff, but AFAIK not in Oz... :(

Kaaz do a clutch diff, I picked one up second hand from the states for $500 Aus landed. I have not fitted it yet so can not report on it, but I know a few people who run Kaaz diffs in other cars (not MX5s) and they are happy with them. Keep an eye on e-bay US.

Thanks guys - thought as much. I note Sheck runs a Kaaz system. I'll ask him where he sourced it.

how hard is it to lock an mx centre? my ae86 diff is locked, and you get used to it pretty quickly on the road (although the locked diff combined with concrete suspension made me buy an mx).

does anyone run a 1.6 or 1.8 diff locked on the street here? mines currently open, but i find it to be pretty damn well balanced... only letting go while changing directions sliding in the wet.

If it is just a CIG locker (welded) an MX5 would be easy enough to do, just a matter of welding up the spider gears like on most diffs.
Not a mod I would do, an LSD is a much better option.

A locked diff sounds like a quick way to rooted tyres and squealing around roundabouts.
