don't worry about that too much. if you just want better fuel mixtures, get the dfa. it's cheap and does the job brilliantly.
the megasquirt has some extra features like timing advance / retard, and uses a map sensor.
BUT you can manually bump your timing, and the afm is not as bad as some will have you beleive. so unless you really feel you need these extra benefits, save yourself the $300 (and a bunch of headaches and wiring) and just get the dfa.
but like i said, i've gone for a megasquirt. that's not coz i don't like the dfa. it's just coz i am fitting a turbo and will need the timing control the megasquirt offers.
dfa or megasquirt, both are good ! you can't go wrong, whichever way you decide to go..

good points there. i agree the dfa does not have as much going for it as a full standalone ecu. it just depends how far you want to take things i guess. the megasquirt has so much more on offer, but is a lot more complex to build, install, and tune, plus costs a lot more obviously (still a bargain tho! ).
i think the dfa is a great tool for people who want to do a cold air intake, extractors / zort and leave it at that. or even people who want a basic diy turbo kit (in conjunction with injector upgrades)
so basically yeah, you're spot on. i'm not convinced that the same level of fine tuning can be acheived by just tightenning the clockspring, but as i never tried it i just don't know. considering that we have much nicer fuel available in australia these days than we did when mazda programmed these ecu's 15+ years ago, i think we should be able to get a good result by tuning for 98 octane fuel for example, and makins sure to use that every time you fill up.

carsokay - what happens to the AFM if you tighten the clockspring? would this make the vane/flap firmer or weaker? if it makes it weaker then more air than the ECU thinks, effectively running less rich? Interesting idea, has anyone else tried?
With MS; are there some default maps you could load for the MX5 before putting it through tuning? Anyone out there with MS running MX for some feedback?

The default N/A map for the Megasquirt is my map (all of the other Megasquirt/MX-5/Miata pioneers are running turbo setups). And what type of feedback are you after?
Sorry Steve, my bad, I mean feedback as in MS with MX owners opinions.
I've got power steering and Air-con on mine, can you configure the MS to control these accessories in standalone mode? or will I need to run the MS as a piggy to maintain the correct idle etc? Also can you configure the MS to work with any MAP sensor or does it have to be a specific one?
