Radiator Problems

Postby GP » Mon Jan 08, 2007 4:10 pm

Only had the car for a month or so and the top tank of the rad split. What a pain to get out :| Is this normal for a car of this age or do you think it's been caused by some other problem?
Thanks
Graham

same thing happened to mine a few weeks ago. so i guess it's just a typical sign of an aging car.

got a new one fitted for $570 at nat-rad. i could've done better if i shopped around and did the work myself but i needed the car back on the road immediately as i was leaving for my holiday that day (accomodation booked and paid for etc). such bad timing.

Normal problem. A radiator service place (Red Devil etc.) will be able to replace the top tank. I had mine done 40,000km ago and it's been fine under all conditions.....including track days.

The radiator is easy to remove with the fans on it.

yeah steve good point about the auto rad, i really should have got one of those to improve my cooling in preparation for when the turbo goes in. i'm kind of annoyed at the nat-rad guy upon reflection. i needed it fixed immediatley and he helped me out, BUT i did ask him if i could get an auto rad fitted and he said they were incompatible, which i think is bullshit. i figure now he was just spinning me a line to get me out of his hair as i was pushy about getting the job done as quickly as possible, and he had the manual rad in stock.

i guess it pays to do your research and shop around when buying parts for your car, i just didn't have that luxury on this occasion unfortunately.

Thanks guys, The rad guy said that it's normal for that age. They collected it from work and had it back in a couple of hours with a new top tank for a $100.
I did leave fans on till it was out, The painfull part was removing that huge plastic cover from under the engine bay.
A full metal rad would be great but I'm on a budget.
Oh and I already have an Auto rad in my Auto car  It was hard to find one with an auto
