2nd hand 6 speed gearbox how much?????

Postby flycasta » Sat Dec 30, 2006 8:45 am

I moved this to this section.......

How much should I expect to pay for a secondhand 6 speed gearbox?

I have heard figures of around $2000 but then I have also heard wreckers cant get rid of them for around $1200.

Also are all 6 speeds the same close ratio type or was there differences for turbo and non turbo?

Thanks

6 speed had a ratio of 3.9: 1 in the Heritage & 10AE. When the 6 speed became standard with the NB8B it went to 3.6:1
NA6's were 4.3
NA8's were 4.1
NB8A's were 4.1 for the 5 speed & 3.9 for the 6 speeds

Please shoot me down if i got it wrong.

i think there is also an aticle on miata.net written by an Aussie about the various ratios.

as far as price goes.....if you see one for $1200 id be grabbing it with both hands. ( if i was on the market for one.

I think he means the box ratios stan not the diff :D I know who to ask about diff ratios though. As far as I know they should be the same with a 1:1 5th gear a overdrive 6th. As for 1st-4th they should be the same too. If close ratio is what you are after you may want to retain your std diff, basiacally you would just be gaining an extra gear where there were 4 before now there would be 5 and therefore closer. By putting a taller diff in you would effectively be spreading out the gears and making it as if you just put one on top of the 5 you already have.

From what I have heard even at $2000 it would be a good price. I would love a 6 spd but too many other things in line for my money first :D

Good luck and happy hunting

Thanks Guys, I know the ratios for the 6 speed, I was just wondering what people had paid for them or had seen them priced at. Diffs are not a problem as I have a few different ratios and LSD's. I mainly just wanted to know what the 6 speeds were worth.

Thanks

MX5 Mania. The only thing you have to remember if you have a 1.6 diff already you will have to visit the exhaust man to re route the exhaust a little also the gear drive on your speedo will have to change (but we should have that fixed very soon). But I have to say I was a little scepticle putting so much cash into my car but I have to say it is worth every cent it makes an MX5 what it should be. There is no hole in the power delivery it is seemless. It makes the car complete. The car can just stay on cam and just sings along. Do this before turbos, big money rebuilds or ecus. You won't be disapointed
