Intercooler kits ??????

Postby tasroadster » Wed Dec 13, 2006 8:35 pm

I am requiring an Intercooler for a NA6 ???????

Are Intercooler kits available for the NA6 or is it possible to use a 2nd hand
SE Intercooler and associated piping to fit.

What are the plumbing options for the NA6?

Looks a little tricky to fit the plumbing in an NA6 with A/C.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Most are individually fabricated to suit the turbo/exhaust manifold you are using. If you are using a popular set up like the Greddy or AVO kit then you might be able to find something ready made but be prepared to pay for someone elses R&D expenses.

If you decide to design your own then I wouldn't bother with an SE intercooler. You can get brand new intercoolers from Ebay for next to nothing these days that are much larger than the oil cooler size the SE uses and seem to work fine.

Boyracer is using an Ebay intercooler on his SE race car. It looks like it was put there by the factory and looks about tripple the size of the Mazda unit.

Thanks for that.

What is the \"accepted\" size or dimentions of the intercooler ??

If I can have some idea of the measurements .......... I will work from there with the piping and fitment.

Thnks again

Boyracer - I take it Mania or some other reputable fabricator did your intercooler pipes for you? How much did it cost and what size piping did you use with that intercooler? I think the inlet/outlet on the intercooler is 2 and 1/4 inches...

I believe the stock intercooler pipes on the SE are 2inch and what boyracer has done is just cut the existing stock SE pipes to fit the new cooler and attached it with silicons flanges.

Please correct me if im wrong lou.

I guess that would work. It's not exactly pretty though.

I may be interested in selling my intercooler and associated plumbing/blow off valve early in the new year.
Will be complete with a bar and plate intercooler, stainless steel pipes and a GFB blow off valve. It is for a 1.8 using a avo manifold. Probably sell the turbo and manifold with it if someone wants the lot.

the size is 550 x 140 x 65. Is this the size that some of you guys have used?

This is what boyracer is using.

If so then it is different in dimensions to the IC used by Flyin Miata 19" x 8" x 3" ( or 418 x 176 x 55 cm). It is obvioulsy wider, yet slimmer. Does this matter?

Tricky, theoretically the ebay cooler compared to the SPM has greater surface area exposed because of the shape of our spoiler which would mean better cooling. However my concern is if the volume of the ebay cooler is greater then the SPM cooler then the onset of boost would come on later. Why? With more volume without an increase in pressure/boost, it would take longer to fill the cooler taking longer for air to reach the throttle body.

Does it need any special brackets?

Yes

Who can install it? mania or another fabricator?

the AVO kit is beautiful, comes with a great cooler, and nice cast alloy piping and it all bolts up beautifully.

THe price is reasonable for approx $1k for the lot. Can support over 300hp problem free.
When results speak for themselves - don't interrupt.
