As it happens, I put one in last Thursday night.
The instructions are flat out wrong.
After you remove the stock shifter, you must ALSO remove the plastic ring that the stock ball sits in. It is removed by using a screwdriver to lever it up at the back of the shifter housing and it will pop out from below the detent stud. Don't forget to get the spring washer underneath it.
The small aluminium ring with a notch in it from the kit then goes into the housing. The notch allows it to clear the old detent stud. Notch faces DOWN to go over the detent stud.
The plastic ring you pulled from the housing then goes in on top of the aluminium ring, spring between plastic and aluminium.
The shifter then goes in.
The housing extension then goes on around the shifter, line up the detent stud and the slot in the shifter so they face forward like the stock one does.
The plastic ring that comes with the kit then goes in (aluminium washer on TOP), plastic side to the shifter ball.
Put the housing cover on top and cinch down the bolts.
Test assembly. 1-2-3-4-5-R, etc.
Make very certain that the shifter is screwed together - it is two piece and mine came loose on the first day - very worrying until I worked out what was wrong. Mine is now held with Loctite.
Then put all the rubber boots back on. The console, etc.
