I've always wanted a taller final drive (diff ratio) for the SP. The six speed box is great though and I'd leave it as it is, but would be nice to have a taller first gear to avoid the all-to-quick change into second and a taller 6th for the highway would be nice too. Something to drop the revs at 100km/h down to about 2500 rpm - right in the meaty range of the turbo.

The thing with the 6 speed is, IIRC, 1st and 6th in the six speed are pretty much the same as 1st and 5th in the 5 speed, we just have a closer ratio spread for those tricky \"2nd's too low and 3rd's too high\" corners.

Dropping to first on the move :!:- shouldn't even be necessary in an SE

I can understand that down Canberra way, but we do have some seriously twisty hair-pins up this way ...and when you're stuck behind one of those slow Malibu's going up the mountain, one occasionally has to resort to novel tactics to stay awake.

For about 15 years I also used to live about 20 mins from Samford. The Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo Roads were my backyard - good to blow out the cobwebs, but they were reasonably well flowing and I can see no need for a change into 1st unless you actually stop. I also pioneered the QLD clubs's inaugural run to Springbrook in the Gold Coast hinterland. At least once a year we visit the relies in Melany, and my folks have just moved to Coolum with its speccy coastal drive.

Nice roads about Brisbane for sure, indeed I would rate the Mt Glorious to Wivenhoe/Esk tourist road a better driver's road then the Great Ocean Road except it misses the spectacular coastline.

We have some equally spectacular roads this way too. The beauty of Canberra is that you can point your car in almost any direction, drive for 20 minutes and you will find yourself on a country back road. Also the Snowies are close at hand and the coast is an hour or so away with a mountain range to negotiate to reach the seaside. You must come and try them yourself to gain a better understanding of the region.

For mine though, the roads in Tassie and New Zealand are hard to beat. Come to think of it, even climbing over Arthur's Pass on the South Island in a Toyota Echo didn't require a downchange into first.

tee hee. Yeah, I lived in Canberra for 12 months (beautiful place)...I even drove the silver SP down there (pity we didn't catch up). I only ever saw one other SP...a silver one out of Quenbeyan I think.

...I think I raised a few eyebrows on those cold frosty mornings with QLD plates and the roof down.

Totally agree with Tassie roads. We hired a MX5 in July one year....sensational time...roof down most of the time...tourist free roads...great drives. I have a preference for the East Coast, but I can can certainly understand your opinion about the West Coast too.

...It is. And it seems it's been a vain attempt to flush him out from his hiding spot. He hasn't been seen around here for MONTHS. Some are speculating he's had to trade Tweety Bird in for "something more sensible!!!"....
