I think you guys have your lines crossed up.

You are both right however.

NMX516 is talking about disconnecting the boost pressure reference line from the turbo compressor housing to the actuator.

Boags is talking about disconnecting the actuator from the waste gate flap in the turbo exhaust housing.

Hi Jake. Your spot on. In the end I only mentioned that minor detail because it was very handy in my situation to keep the car mobile. One of the main points I was trying to make is that the 1.6 Turbo will give you what your looking for. The difference between a 1.6T and a 1.8T all things being equal would be about 10 to15 kw max. There are so many variables in setup that unless your on the track it shouldn't be noticed.
Tinkered with 1991 NA6

I was referring to the air line to the wastegate actuator, which is what I thought was being referred to... :)

not much to add other than to agree with what AL said. before you decide to ditch the 1.6, try and get a ride in a 1.6 turbo - you might find that is has enough grunt for what you are looking for. there should be someone in your state's mx5 club, or here on the forum, that can help you out.

Since you’re not going for crazy power, just get the AVO 1.6 kit.
It’s ADR compliant so no need to search for a “factory turbo” solution.

Then with the money you save ..

Buy a roll cage and harness

Then spend your cash on suspension, LSD and brakes.

Buy a race seat and you’ll probably need a new clutch by now.

Then you can think of upgrading the ECU for more power like using a motec or autronic.

Then once you’ve learnt to ring the bollocks out of the car, look at upgrading the engine internals and getting a better turbo.
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
