Installed Spikey's computer - interesting results

Postby ZenArcher » Sat Sep 09, 2006 1:41 pm

OK, for those that have read through the other thread, I have been wanting to buy a computer.

spikey was kind enough to send over his JDM chipped (Boxer field chipped) NA6 computer.

Previous setup was a NA8 installed in my NA6, and using the NA6 std computer to run it. BTW, I have a JDM NA6 Import. Also running the NA6 airbox with a second air pickup on it and the NA8 cross over pipe, NA6 throttle body with the Flyin Miata adaptor.

With the std setup the plugs were always black and sooty all the time, no matter what sort of fuel I was running and I was using the std NGK spark plugs. Throttle body was cleaned out today as well with carby cleaner just to make sure it was clean.

1/2 an hour ago I installed spikey's computer and went for a 15 minute run. Initially I could only detect a slight increase in responsiveness but nothing to write home about. Went to the local Mobil station, filled up and drove home. I then removed the spark plugs and had a small heart attack. They basically looked almost new. From totally black and sooty to nearly looking new. Well, not quite that good, but I think you can get the picture. Basically there was no black sooty crap left on any part of the plug and the white area that has the centre electrode was actually white of slightly off white in colour.

As Okibi suggested in the other thread, I will be putting the car on the dyno and checking the tune A/F ratio etc to make sure all is good.

But, and correct me if I am wrong here, with the change in plug colour/condition even after this short drive - would mean that the engine is now getting the correct A/F ratio mix? and not running rich anymore which I again assume is why the plugs were initially totally black and sooty? I also assume I can expect better fuel economy now? Previously, even if I drove very conservatively staying under 4000rpm, I would be lucky to get 300klms to a tank around town and that is mostly 60 to 80kph to and from work. Not much stop start stuff as I live really close to the main highway that takes me straight into work.

Opinions? Advice?

hey zen, sounds like you're on a better track - from your description, my plugs are a simlar colour & i'm running the unichip piggy which has been dyno tuned. when i first saw the plug colour i thought it was lean but everything had been fitted & tuned by a reputable shop, & continues to run fine almost 2 years later. i normally associate a light tan colured plug with optimal running but this was based on older twin cam carby engines.

forgot to mention that I left the 1.8 injectors installed. Spikey also sent me some 1.6 injectors, but I decided to just try the computer first. Looks like I am initially getting the results I was after.

I will see what happens when I can put the car on the dyno as that will be proof in the pudding.
