Oil Filter Relocation Kit!

Did an oil change a few thousand km ago so won't be installed for a month or two.

Going to make servicing A LOT easier and cleaner though.

Not too sure yet. Probably on the side of that panel behind the driver's side headlight near the wheel arch. Haven't opened the bonnet yet so will need to have a proper look.

You wont regret it Bevan. Just allow enough room under it to accomodate the unscrewed filter and a rag/container/cup.

think i remember seeing some mounted to the fire wall aswell. nice an out of the way.

anyone know if relocation changes any dynamics of the motor other than a bit more oil to fill the lines??

Apparently the firewall amplifies the sound of the oil passing through the filer. Some in the US have moved or removed their relocation kit because of this vibration. :roll:

Thanks for the pic Woo! That looks MUCH easier than the spot it's in now. That could be an idea although I don't have the extra braket for it.

Will try and find a spot toward the rear of the engine bay, doubt the firewall though, looks way too busy to try and wedge in there.

Bevan you can get all sorts of 90\" brackets from Bunnings and rig it up that way.

It's what I plan on doing sometime.

Here's mine at the moment; I just undo the bolt each time and hang it into an ice cream container.

Apparently you can get a noticeable "gurgle" noise vibrate through the firewall to the cabin.

I would have to vouch for that as mine makes a noise if you grab the filter whilst the engine is running. Doesnt worry me as the filter is located behind the RH readlight.

How or rather where would you mount it on the firewall on a RH drive car :?:

Was looking at the pics of your install andrew - wont the oil drain back from the filter when you shut the motor down - note that Woo's is 'cup downwards' whilst yours is 'cup upwards'?? Would hate to see you damage the motor at start time for lackof oil pressure...

I used to punch a hole in the filter but I stopped doing that once Tom explained that slightly loosening the oil filter for a few minutes is all that's needed. Loosen it just to the point that you break the vacuum seal and then tighten it back just a tiny bit to prevent oil from seeping out from under the filter o-ring. I do that as the first step and let it stay that way while I'm under the car draining the oil. By the time I've put the drain plug back in, the filter can be completely removed with very minimal additional drainage (all of which is caught in the Thompson base catch reservoir anyway). After that I soak up the little bit of remaining oil in the base with a few paper towels, put on the new filter and dump 4 quarts into the crankcase. DONE!

Sounds like it should be fine if the seal needs to be broken for the filter to drain. See what happens at your first oil change I guess. Certainly more convenient to get to that way up.
