is the exhaust close to anything?
try and shake the cat converter by hand, it could have become brittle and disintegrated.

That was the cause of (one of) a rattle on my NA after changing the clutch. When I removed the exhaust, the heatshield on the exhaust was fractured, and I broke it completely.
Fix? Buy some extractors off ebay and get rid of that heatshield completely.
