Anyone able to advise what the tab on the backing plate on the passenger side of the back of the boot is for? Looks almost like it would be for an electrical connection - perhaps an earth point?

EDIT: just looked through some Google Images and couldn't see it on any others. Is it perhaps a JDM item or aftermarket ad on?

Aftermarket for sure. Looks pretty homemade and neither my AU nor JDM NA's had it.
