Hi,

I had water in the passenger side footwell (2002 MK2.5) yesterday and figured out that the rubber drain tube had come off what I think is a part of the a/c.
I popped it back on the nozzle but kept the aircon off since.





Where does the rubber tube lead to? Can I flush it to check whether it’s patent? I just want to make sure it’s not blocked further down causing it to pop off.

The tube drains through a hole on the trans tunnel. Common for this pipe to come off and drop water in the footwell, also known to get a blocked sometimes. I fitted a worm clamp on mine to hold it on. Check the other end is still fitted through it's hole as well.

Engine Control Unit resides in the passenger footwell, so worth lifting the carpet & underlay to dry the area, otherwise ECU can become water affected.

I must of pushed mine up a bit causing it to become kinked when I had the trans out.
It filled up the lower half of the ac evaporator housing until I took a right turn, then spilled out.
Suspecting a heater core/pipe or rusted cowl I pulled the dash off. So I took the chance to clean out the leaves and crud in the fins of evaporator core. I also fitted some new foam tape around the blower pipes in and out of the housing as they had broken down and no longer sealed.

Have a good look at the wiring/connectors/ECU box while you are there. If they look wet/have been wet, it might be worth pulling the ECU out, opening it up and checking it for water entry, maybe hitting it with a PCB-safe water dispersant spray, if such a thing exists. Ditto wiring.

I have never done this, don't know if it is possible, or even a good idea, but I do know that water in your ECU/wiring is a thoroughly bad thing. While replacement ECUs are available from the wreckers, it is the immobiliser that is the problem - the ECU needs to talk to the immobiliser, the immobiliser needs to talk to the ignition key via the reader in the switch, so the last thing you want is to have to get that happening with a new ECU - it's doable, but a lot of stuffing around. I have recently been on the sidelines of a couple of cars with these issues, it was not a trivial exercise to get them working. Similarly, I would not want to have to pull the dash to put a new loom in.

Unless you have had water sloshing around in the passenger footwell, you will probably be ok. But I would check. Then I would get a hose clamp on the a/c drain, and clean out the rain rail drains as well , they are the other source of water in the cabin.

manga_blue on here has used a water dispersant type spray on his ECU without issue.
It's surprising how many NB8B onwards on here have had ECU issues, most likely due to getting wet.
