NA, corrosion at foot of windscreen pillars

Postby Panda » Sun Jul 09, 2017 9:17 pm

My NA has bubbling paint at the foot of the windscreen pillars. This is worsening quite quickly. Has anyone else has this concern, and if so could you suggest a good place to have this rectified?
Thanks,
Phil

Welcome! Not uncommon on MX5 NA6 if the various drainage areas have not been maintained.
For panel shop recommendations, we'll need to know what city you're in or near. Hume Smash Repairs is a forum sponsor & highly recommended if you're in Sydney: http://humesmashrepairs.com.au/

Mine had it. Very common as I guess water must collect at that corner of windshield. Both sides will have it. Any panel beater should be able to fix it.

personally -I wouldn't pay any-one to do the repair in a minor area like this. it could be done cheaply by yourself with the use of - rust converter-metal mend filler and a spray can of matched paint.

if it's gone under the windscreen rubber seal and deep into the corner then it's a far different story and it's not gonna be cheap to fix at any panel shop. first the windscreen has to be pulled then the rust cut out. new metal added and filled and then re-painted and the screen back in. might even be up for a new rubber too

done properly its going to swallow up several hundred bucks easily as there'd be a few hours worked involved in the repair job alone.

i'f you were concerned about your work ability just re-spray the complete screen surrounds in matte black and no-one will know the difference.

on a job like this i'd chase a least a couple of quotes plus ask the shop-what are they actually going to do to solve the issue.

The windshield needs to come out, which means a likely replacement. The whole window frame will need painting.
The rust will be a lot bigger than what is currently visible as it will extend under the windshield. Mine had only tiny bumps in the paint and looked minor. Once the glass was out it was big-ish.

Thank you all for your input. It will be a windscreen out job as the corrosion is bubbling out from the rubber surround.

To answer the location question, we are in Geelong Victoria.

Again, thank y'all.

There are a few forimites in the Geelong area, so one of them might have a panel shop recommendation. But if you ever need exhaust work or components, then Town & Country in the Geelong area have a great rep with MX5 owners.
