What happened to my poor car in its previous life. Rust and strange bodywork

Hi all,

Been stalking the forum for ages and now have a question on what has been done to my 1989 eunos roadster.
It all started with an auto to manual swap... which is now way out of hand

I started digging at this crappy, brittle, black "body sealer" in the rear arch and found all this. there is also bog where the rear guard meets the boot lid to try and smooth the metal joins.

The panel in front of the boot lid is in grey primer for some reason and the access holes to the underside of the Frankenstein bolts have been molested to be enlarged.

The rear mounts don't line up on my black hardtop but do on my green one (which is cracked in several spots).

The rear fender doesn't line up with the inner guard, so they sit at a strange angle to each other, where they should be pressed flat together. And there is this weird cut in the top of the underside of arch.

Basically I think the car is a little bent and had a whole rear 1/4 panel sewn back on a long time ago.

My plan is to:
Get the mig out, join all the bits of metal back together and remove all the rust in the car (that I can be bothered to).
Do rough repair on the green hardtop, store the black one till I upgrade.
Paint the car somewhere along the line.

Does anyone have any insight into what has happened or what I should do?

Many thanks everyone!

Ronnie

Sounds like it's not worth the time and effort.

Depending on where they've lived & how they've been maintained, rust can be a problem, although we tend to see less of it here in MX5s. Hope you got it for a bargain price & love a project - good luck!

Well I've got time, and don't have money for an alternative mx5, guess I'll make this one work until I win the lotto :P
