Removing splash gaurds?

Postby jko » Tue Jul 19, 2016 8:51 pm

Hello,

Ive just installed my new Nitto NT01 205/50/15's onto my Work Equip 03's 15x8+22 and im running into some rubbing problems at the front.

My front fenders have already been rolled and there is a finger gap worth of space between the tires and splash gaurd, which I'm pretty sure the tires are rubbing onto. Should I remove the splash guards to prevent the tires from rubbing? Is there any harm in removing them?

Ive already adjusted the damper settings on my BC coils to 6 clicks from hard and still scrubbing :(

Thanks in advance.

With out the plastic guards stuff will get stuck between the guard and cabin wall likely causing an excelerated corrosion

How low is your car?
Just raise it a centimeter

That's not as bad as accelerated corrosion.

Also, stones being flicked off the tyres can make small raised dimples in top of fenders

dammit :( any one have a solution to solving this issue other than raising the car?

Gonna try going max stiffness on the coils to see how it is.

If they're only hitting the plastic guards, and I my under decent compression, I'd just let them.

The tyre nudging a plastic panel a few times a day won't cause any harm.

its quite often, like every time i go on a speed hump, sharp turns, small pot holes. Its quite annoying. May actually just remove them if max stiffness wont do the job.

Changing ride height may not be needed, change the length of the shock as it may already be too long hence the rubbing. Making it stiff won't help apart from make it harsh.

If it is rubbing on the plastic then it will be showing, like this (which was caused by incorrect shock length)

excelerated is the Microsoft spelling whereas accelerated in the Apple version...

In the next couple of weeks I have to fix a rubbing issue with my new 205s (on only a 35 offset wheel). My rubbing causes my car to slow in corners on the racetrack and sounds like a truck horn in the passenger seat. I was hoping to leave the splash guards in place, but perhaps alter their location slightly. I have already removed one of the mounting screws which protrudes at the top of the inner guard. I only need a touch more clearance at the outer edge near where the plastic guard meets the steel panel (guard). My guess is you have a similar issue? More negative camber will help.

.
My guess is you need either stiffer springs, more sensible ride height, or more negative camber.

fwiw, I ran 205/50 R888s and NT01s on +17 rims for a few years and had only minor rubbing on fully loaded corners on track which is way more load than you would get on road.
I had 2.5 deg neg camber, 7kg front springs, and slightly lower ride height.

I don't consider this a "ride height" issue. I think Magpie was on point, this is a shock travel issue. The tyre is running out of room before the shock runs out of travel. Ideally, the shock will engage the bumpstop before the tyre reaches the top of the wheel well.

If you can adjust the shock length, you can drop the max height of the tyre's travel by making the shock longer. Then you can adjust your pre-load to get your ride height back.

Also, when was the last time you had an alignment?

I had this issue with my HSDs, but I couldn't dial it out completely using the method as I described above. When I switched to my Xidas the issue persisted. Xidas are designed to fit a MX-5/miata specifically, their length was designed to be correct, so shock length wasn't the issue. I got the car aligned and the technician told me that I had extreme caster before he made his changes. This caster alters the line the wheel travels up and down inside the wheel well, and instead of moving into the deepest part of the well, it's moving into a shallower area and impacting the liner.

After the alignment the issue was gone!

Here's an easy fix;
Just trim the raised parts of the liners!
My car had the liners removed. The water noise flicking onto the front edge of the door was irritating. A little water would get into the engine bay. I just cut out the bumpy bits on the liners and refitted.

This sounds very similar to whats happening to me. I might play around with the plastic gaurd and try stop the tire from rubbing against it. I dont know how to change my coilover height, shock length and preload or whatever. Not too familiar with the technical side of coilovers etc.
